Hecate is the quintessential goddess of crossroads. The oldest representations of the goddess present her as a guide for those who are lost or travel. It was customary to place statues of this deity at crossroads, especially those where three of them converged. Many of these works depicted the goddess with three heads, referring to her triple powers as mistress of heaven, sea, and hell. On the other hand, she is a way of symbolizing the different consequences that following one path or another can entail.

Hecate's function as an assistant to travelers is not only restricted to the terrestrial sphere. The sailors considered her her patron saint and it was common to make sacrifices or offerings so that the goddess would help everything go well and the believers would arrive safely at her destination.
